A first safari in Kenya is rarely just a holiday. Within a single journey you can watch big cats hunt on the plains of the Maasai Mara, stand beneath the snows of Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, and finish barefoot on the white sand of Diani Beach. Knowing how to sequence those days is what separates a good trip from an extraordinary one.

When to travel

Kenya is a year-round destination. The dry months from late June to October bring the great migration into the Maasai Mara and the easiest game viewing of the year. January and February are warm, clear and quieter, with excellent conditions in Amboseli, Samburu and Tsavo. The green seasons bring fewer visitors, newborn wildlife and dramatic skies for photography.

How long to stay

Seven to ten days allows a genuine Kenya safari without rushing: three or four nights in the Mara, two in Lake Nakuru or Amboseli, then time at the coast. Shorter Kenya safari packages of three to five days suit a first visit or an extension to business travel, while longer itineraries open up Samburu's northern landscapes and the red-earth wilderness of Tsavo.

Beyond Kenya

Kenya sits at the centre of East Africa, which makes it a natural starting point rather than a boundary. A Kenya and Tanzania safari can follow the same migration across the Serengeti, and a few days in Zanzibar add Swahili history and the Indian Ocean to the close of a journey.
